Caleb walked through what felt like the 100th puddle. He had stopped avoiding them. If he was going to die of leptospirosis, so be it. He had lived a street rat’s life, he shall die a street rat’s death. He drudged through puddle after puddle; let his tears be covered by the rain.
The moment was not the summary of his day though. For once, Caleb had awoken on the right side of the bed. This was very unusual for him; usually, the right side of his bed had the bookshelf, but he had moved houses the previous day, and the orientation was the opposite. Now the bookshelf was to the left… Well, he slept with his feet towards the headrest, so technically the orientation had remained the same, but he woke up on the right side of the bed is the point.
He had a nice breakfast. Nice is relative. And also absolute. He had the best breakfast he had had in his life. He had the best breakfast anyone had ever had in their life. It was healthy, delicious and most importantly, warm.
It was not until after lunch (also warm and the best lunch he had ever had), that Caleb’s day took a U-turn. It all started with that U-turn on Kalverstraat. He was walking, he remembered he had to go return his street rat costume at the Halloween store. He also remembered he forgot to do the homework for drama class about exaggerating all his pain and happiness and having internal monologues about himself in the third person. Luckily, it started raining, and he had some glycerin on, so he could really get that drama practice in. Now, as his monologue is about to end, he has reached the Halloween store, and he shall stop this.
